SOS is an animation displayed on a floating billboard that navigated the waters of Miami Beach during Art Basel on December 10, 2017. SOS is the international Morse code distress signal used to indicate an emergency or an immediate need for assistance, often associated with maritime danger. In this instance, three short signals, three long signals, and three short signals of white LED light from the full floating billboard are followed by the phrase: “RESPECT EXISTENCE OR EXPECT RESISTANCE.” This message is continuously played throughout Art Basel Miami. It serves as an environmental distress signal that reminds viewers to respect both their surroundings and humanity. Additionally, it draws attention to vacationers in Miami Beach regarding the impact they have on the natural environment and encourages them to take conscious steps to improve it.
